Tim Pomeroy: The Natural, Hewn: The Practical, Honed

04 May 2011 - 27 May 2011

Agnew’s Gallery is pleased to be presenting the latest work of Scottish artist and sculptor Tim Pomeroy.

Tim’s work is mostly based on Neolithic and Bronze-Age archaeology and grave goods. He uses carved stone forms with gilded detail to enhance the sense of power and preciousness of the objects he makes. Other aspects of his sculpture reflect a keen interest in engineered objects and organic forms.

“Moving from narrative pieces and figurative work to simpler (but still literal) forms such as a screw or a cylinder of string, [Tim Pomeroy] has reached purer forms, often derived from nature or inspired by objects from the Bronze Age found in Scotland. In touching these roots, whether natural or cultural, Pomeroy is reaching for a physical presence that might express his own sense of awe and, as he says, ‘finding a language to address the gods or spirits that accompany us as we travel through this life.’” – Andrew Guest, 2011

“What we are witnessing here, above all, is the process by which the artist is seeking to construct the mythical framework of his life, providing it with that coherent narrative through which all the memories and experiences of his life, literal and metaphorical, begin to make sense to him. At the same time these are sculptures that reach out and touch us [...] It is only a guess, but one of the reasons we respond so directly and viscerally to Pomeroy’s work lies, above all, in its rootedness in the everyday and the practical.” – Nicholas Usherwood, 2011
